External Stone, Weather and Wear: Why the Right Protection Matters

External Stone, Weather and Wear: Why the Right Protection Matters

External stone brings strength, texture and character to a project, whether it is a terrace, courtyard, entrance, walkway or wall. The catch is that from the moment it is laid, the surface has to deal with weather, foot traffic, leaves, oils and pollution. Sealing it is the difference between a surface that stays easy to care for and one that stains, darkens and becomes unpredictable to maintain.

This guide explains why external stone benefits from sealing, how to choose between a natural finish and an enhanced wet-look finish, and how to apply and maintain the right product.

Why external stone needs sealing

Porous materials such as unpolished natural stone, terracotta, quarry tiles and concrete absorb far more than dense, polished finishes. Once water, oil or staining agents soak in, the material becomes harder to clean and the finish less predictable. Textured stone makes it worse, because dirt collects in the surface profile. A suitable sealer limits that absorption and gives the surface a stronger starting point before it faces a full season of weather and use.

Natural finish or enhanced finish?

The clearest way to choose a sealer is to decide on the look you want.

For a natural finish, where the stone should look untouched, Fila W68 is a water-based, water and oil repellent sealer for porous, unpolished surfaces. It does not form a surface film or change the appearance, so it suits natural stone, terracotta, quarry tiles, agglomerates and concrete. It is breathable, low-VOC and Foodsafe certified, can be applied to surfaces that are not fully dry, and does not affect the frost resistance of terracotta. Coverage runs roughly 10 to 20 square metres per litre on stone and around 7 to 20 square metres on terracotta, depending on the material.

For an enhanced finish, where you want the colour to look deeper and richer, Fila Wet Eco is a water-based, VOC-free colour enhancer that gives a wet-look effect on unpolished stone, terrazzo and terracotta. It enhances colour while protecting against stains and foot traffic, will not flake or yellow outdoors, and is reversible with Nopaint Star if you change your mind.

What a good external sealer does

On absorbent stone, water and oil repellence stops staining agents from sinking in, which matters most on surfaces exposed to food, drink, oils, rainwater and organic dirt. Breathability is just as important outdoors, which is why W68 protects without forming a film, letting the surface breathe while keeping its natural look. The aim is protection that supports the surface without complicating the finish.

Application and aftercare

Results depend on preparation. Always carry out a patch test first, especially where the final appearance matters. The surface should be clean and dry, and you should not apply if rain is forecast. On low-absorbency materials such as slate, Botticino or Carrara marble, Wet Eco should be diluted with water. Note that W68 does not protect against acid attack, so that should be made clear where it is relevant.

Once sealed, maintain the surface with a diluted neutral cleaner such as Cleaner Pro, and plan to refresh enhanced finishes periodically, since outdoor wear is constant. Protection makes stone easier to care for, but it is not a complete barrier against every mark, so a simple cleaning routine still matters.

Frequently asked questions

Will sealing change the colour of my stone?

It depends on the product. W68 gives a natural finish and does not alter the appearance. Wet Eco is designed to enhance colour with a wet-look effect, so it deliberately deepens the tone.

Which sealer should I use on outdoor paving?

For a natural look on porous paving, terracotta or concrete, use W68. For a richer, enhanced look on unpolished stone, terrazzo or terracotta, use Wet Eco. Always patch test first.

How often should I re-seal external stone?

It varies with exposure and traffic. Enhanced finishes outdoors generally benefit from periodic reapplication, while a natural-finish sealer like W68 is long-lasting with proper maintenance.

Does W68 protect against acid?

No. W68 does not protect against acid attack, so acidic spills should still be cleaned promptly, and acid-sensitive stone such as marble and limestone needs care.

Can these sealers be used indoors?

Yes. Both are suitable for interior and exterior use on the right materials. W68 can also be used as a protective base coat before wax on interior floors.
